New gallery shows to see August 14

Full Moon Art Gallery, 3155 Harborview Drive in Gig Harbor, opens from 5-8pm during Gig Harbor’s Thursday Night out – “Meet Me on the Waterfront” with  artist of the month Kathe Robel. Robel  is displaying her glass art work, and each piece comes with a hand-crafted metal stand by the artist. Featured in front of the gallery is music entertainment by Gig Harbor’s own Dane Wallace playing his guitar and singing.

 

 

Gage Academy of Art, 1501 10th Avenue E. in Seattle, opens from 6-8pm with “Any Day.” Guest curated by artist and Kang-O’Higgins Atelier graduate Elana Winsberg, “Any Day” is a dialogue about death. The exhibition includes painting, fiber work, prints and installation by Mitch Albala, Josie Furchgott Sourdiffe, Sam Hamrick, Emma Jane Levitt, Kathy Liao, Greg Lundgren, Iskra Johnson, Memuco, Pamela Durga Robinson, Kurt Vance, Margaret Swanson Vance and Elana Winsberg.  The show runs through September 19.

 

 

samgallSAM Gallery, located in the downtown Seattle Art Museum, presents Liz Tran at the Taste Restaurant during the opening reception from  6–7:30 pm. On view through November 9, the exhibit channels geodes, flowers, outer space, and The Big Bang, Liz Tran’s mixed-media paintings explore the shapes of nature and the psychedelic colors of her imagination. Created as a form of therapy during Seattle’s long, grey winters, Tran’s work creates an atmosphere that is brighter, more playful, more colorful, and more content than the world in which we exist. schackOn August 14th the Schack Art Center‘s main gallery, located at  2921 Hoyt Ave. in Everett, will be filled with maritime scenes, seascapes, and landscapes as it honors painter Joan Pinney, the 2014 Schack Artist of the Year. Pinney is an accomplished watercolorist who draws inspiration from her extensive travels in the Pacific Northwest.  Since 1992 the Schack (formerly Arts Council of Snohomish County) has selected one artist to honor as its "Artist of the Year". This professional artist is someone who is recognized by his or her peers for their considerable accomplishments and contributions to the visual arts in and beyond Snohomish County. Twilight Gallery, 4306 SW Alaska St. in Seattle, is featuring work by Laura Castellanos, Mary Coss, Levi Hastings, Tim Manthey, Naoko Morisawa, Hanna Myers, Lynn Schirmer, Siolo Thompson, and Kate Vrijmoet in a show called “Boundaries” The show opens fro 6-9pm.

The  Vala Art Center hosts a juried art installation with an artist reception and awards on August 14 from 5:30—7:30pm during the Redmond Arts Festival. The festival takes place August 15– 17 at Redmond Town Center and is Redmond’s premier annual arts event featuring 65 artists’ booths, live music on a main stage, wine & beer garden, food trucks, a retailer sidewalk sale and special installations of art.  The festival is run through a partnership between Redmond Town Center and VALA Eastside. Artists from all over Washington State come to the festival to present a wide range of fine arts and crafts.  The location is in Redmond Town Center, 16409 NE 74 St (next door to Z Gallerie) and its hours during the arts festival will be Friday through Sunday 10am – 6pm.  The artwork will be shown through August 29.

Vikings invade Ballard as the Nordic Heritage Museum  hosts the Run Like a Viking 5K at Golden Gardens Park. The run kicks off the 31st Viking Days, the Nordic Heritage Museum’s annual summer festival. Runners pick up packets August 15 from 3-7pm. The run starts at 9am and runners are encouraged to wear Nordic costumes, dogs included.

Viking Days at Nordic Heritage Museum, 3014 Northwest 67th St. Visit www.nordicmuseum.org. for more information. Admission to both Viking Days and the museum is free for all ages. Viking Days is a great chance to view the exhibition Danish Modern: Design for Living in it’s final two weeks on display. Dozens of groups, ranging from traditional folk to rock, will be playing on multiple stages around the museum. In addition, local merchants will sell Nordic, local, and hand-crafted items. The family-friendly event will also include low-cost craft projects for kids and the Nordic Spirit ship will be set up for close inspection and photos. The Nordic Heritage Museum  is a cultural treasure in the Pacific Northwest. It is the only museum in the United States that represents the cultural heritage of all five Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

She’ll demonstrate how she makes the copper embossed pieces, followed by live music featuring Alejandro Fleites and refreshments. Shown: the 6’ tall  Gloria the Maiden of Peace.

 

 

Pottery Northwest  is showing "Prospecting," a solo exhibition of work by Dane Youngren through June 28 in the gallery of Pottery Northwest’s historic home at 226 First Avenue North (between Thomas and John), just one block south of the Key Arena at the Seattle Center. An opening reception with the artist will be held on Saturday, June 1 from 6- 8 pm. Youngren has been an artist in residence at the gallery since 2011. His art engages with the everyday structures of the built environment serving transportation, industrial, and other functional purposes.

Native American Basketry at Harbor History Museum

harborhistory “Woven Stories: Native American Basketry of the Pacific Northwest & Alaska” is on exhibit through October 16 at the new Harbor History Museum in Gig Harbor.  Considered by several basket collectors as one of the best exhibits on the west coast, more than 230 woven baskets, bags, and hats showcase the artistry of Native American and First Nations weavers. The baskets range in age from the 1850s to the modern era. The museum is located at 4121 Harborview Drive in Gig Harbor. Photo by Al Abbott.
