Show Brazil! and the VamoLa Drum & Dance Ensemble kicks off summer at 5:30pm at the Seattle Art Museum Olympic Sculpture Park. Music and art-filled Thursday evenings with food trucks, a rocking SAM Remix at OSP in August and the season-closing Salmon Return Family Festival in September will punctuate the season. The Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs will dedicate Elizabeth Conner’s Painting and Sculpting the Land and Drawing the Land at the Jefferson Park Jubilee opening ceremony in Beacon Hill, noon to 1 p.m., Saturday, July 14. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the artist following the opening ceremony, which will feature Mayor Mike McGinn, Councilmember Sally Bagshaw, Consul General of Japan Kiyokazu Ota and Public Art Program Director Ruri Yampolsky, among others. The two works were commissioned by the Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs with 1% for Art funds.

In conjunction with the exhibition Lucy Pullen: The Cloud Chamber and Related Works, Rebecca Cummins, Associate Professor in the University of Washington’s School of Art, and Jeffrey Wilkes, the Kenneth K. Young Memorial Professor of Physics at the University of Washington, will host an intimate discussion in the East Gallery at the Henry Art Gallery on the ways in which art and science are used to investigate the unknown.

Robin Held talks on stage with Haruko Nishimura and Joshua Kohl, co-founders and principals of Seattle’s renowned Degenerate Art Ensemble about their recent large-scale performance works such as CuckooCrow, Sonic Tales, and Red Shoes, and the artist group’s first art museum exhibition, at the Frye Art Museum through June 19, 2011.

The Burke Museum brings together a trio of outstanding writers to present a one-day workshop on writing about the environment. Museum of Northwest Art in La Conner panel discussion at 1pm wherein several artists in “Act 2: The Next Tract” exhibition participate with co-curators Steve Klein, Richard Parrish, and Kathleen Moles in a conversation about coming to glass later in life, and how the Pilchuck residencies supported and further inspired their pursuit of kiln glass.
