March 1 openings around Puget Sound
Allied Arts of Whatcom County, 1418 Cornwall Avenue in Bellingham, partners with the ceramics group Cascade Clay Artists on their art exhibit this March. The show features the contemporary and traditional clay work of the members of Cascade Clay. The opening reception is from 6-9pm.
Anchor Art Space, 216 Commercial Avenue in Anacortes, opens from 6-9pm during the Anacortes Art Walk, with “Ours,” a show about people taking up spaces, staking their claim, and making themselves heard through art.
Childhood’s End Gallery, 222 4th. Avenue W. in Olympia, is featuring new works from “Women Painters of Washington” through April 21. Women Painters of Washington is a professional organization of female artists founded in 1930. The artists’ reception is March 1 from 5-7pm during the Olympia Art Walk.
Cole Gallery, 107 5th. Avenue S. in Edmonds, is featuring new-to-the-gallery artist Angela Bandurka for the month of March. A reception for the artist will be held during the Edmonds Art Walk on March 21 from 5-8pm.
Gallery North, 508 Main Street in Edmonds, their annual Miniature and Small Paintings Show for the month of March. The public invited to meet many of the artists at the awards reception on March 3 from 1-3pm. Another reception is planned during the Edmonds Art Walk on March 21.
A group show called “Human+Nature” opens from 6-8:30pm at Kirkland Arts Center, 620 Market Street in Kirkland. Among the artists is well-know northwest artist Karen Hackenberg.
Ornamental Arts Gallery, 13805 Smokey Point Blvd. Suite 105 in Marysville, will feature Vicki Johnson’s pastel paintings, in a reception on Friday, March 1 from 4-7:00pm. Vicki, an Arlington resident, has two degrees in Fine Arts (University of California at Chico and from Nanyang University in Singapore). She has lived and traveled extensively showing her work in Taiwan, China, Malaysia, Paris, Hong Kong, Singapore, as well as, numerous US states. She is currently working in pastels with landscapes, architecture, and still life subjects. Shown: Monterey in May.
Roby King Galleries, 176 Winslow Way on Bainbridge Island, opens from 6-8pm with a solo exhibition featuring Raenell Doyle’s classical still life paintings. The show runs through March 30.
Scott Milo Gallery, 420 Commercial Avenue in Anacortes, presents northwest pastels by Sandy Byers of Whidbey Island. Byers will do a pastel demonstration during opening reception on March 1 6-9pm. First Friday in May around Puget Sound
Allied Arts of Whatcom County, 1418 Cornwall in Bellingham, is sponsoring an exhibit from over 30 local teaching artists with the Allied Arts Education Project. As part of the 2012 Children’s Art Walk from 6-9pm, the show honors the statewide “Arts in Education Month”. Among the display of teacher art are works by Donna Washington, Ben Mann, Ellen Clark, Janet Lehwalder, Jacquie Bresadola; and 2010 Mayor’s Art Award winner Thor Myhre.
Anchor Art, 216 Commercial Ave in Anacortes, is showcasing a group show called “Take Me with You, drawings from near and far,” in a reception during the Anacortes Art Walk from 6-9pm.
“Hats” opens in a reception from 6-8pm at Bainbridge Arts and Crafts, 151 Winslow Way. Working in glass, paper, paint, and found objects, the artists uncover the inner life of crowns, bonnets, helmets, fedoras, mouse ears, and glamorous chapeaux. Artists include Amy Williams d’Apice, Pam BergLundh, Karen Buhler, Linda Costello, Mary McInnis, Julie Paschkis, and Deborah Peek. Vanbianchi will talk about her life and art on May 5 at 12:30pm. New work by Becky Fletcher and Patty Detzer will be showing at Gallery Cygnus, 109 Commercial in La Conner, beginning May 4 and continuing through June 24. Opening celebration is from 3-5 pm on Saturday, May 5.
Gunnar Nordstrom Gallery, 800 Bellevue Way NE in Bellevue, invites all to join him from 5-8pm in a “Finissage” and Friday Happy Hour featuring works by Theodor Seuss Geisel. Also on hand is jewelry designer Martin Kneeland with Vinosus Jewelry. One of the Seuss pieces is show at the right.
An artist reception will be held at Ornamental Arts Gallery, on Friday, May 4 from 4-7 p.m. at 13805 Smokey Point Blvd. Suite 105 Marysville. Refreshments provided. The featured artists will be Helen Lueken and Lucinda Van Valkenburg. Lucinda is a woodworker using many locally found recycled hardwoods. Helen works with soft pastels, watercolor and oils.
Opening from 6-8pm at Roby King Galleries, 176 Winslow Way E. on Bainbridge Island, is a show featuring Diane Ainsworth and David Turner. Their show, "Pertaining to the Sea" is about life around the Puget Sound, working on the water, playing on the water, or just viewing the water.
“Vessels, “ a group exhibition featuring artists working in a variety of different media, is on view through the month of May at Smith & Vallee Gallery, 5742 Gilkey Avenue in Edison. The show explores a very broad definition of a vessel – displaying vessel as ceramic objects, vessel as boat or craft, and vessel as container or cavity.
The Island Gallery, 400 Winslow Way on Bainbridge Island, showcases Susan C. Petersen’s “Card Art” through May 27. As part of her artistic repertoire, the Bainbridge Island artist designs one-of-a-kind keepsake cards using natural fiber papers, hand-gathered pressed flowers, leaves, seaweed and found objects, embellished with paints, inks and pastels.
First Friday September 2 around Puget Sound
Allied Arts of Whatcom County, 1418 Cornwall in Bellingham, continues the “2011 Juried Artist Series: Combinations” through October 1. An opening night celebration takes place from 6-10pm.
Anchor Art Space,, 216 Commercial Avenue in Anacortes, opens “Orchards, Gardens and Birds,” featuring the works of Ron and Kathryn Glowen, in a reception from 6-9pm. The exhibition runs through October 1. One of the pieces in the show is to the right.
artEAST Art Center, 95 Front Street in Issaquah, presents a juried exhibition, “Driven to Abstraction”, opening with an artists’ reception from 6-8pm on Sept. 2, and continuing through Oct. 2. The show brings together artists unknown to each other but traveling a similar journey of personal discovery, and gives a glimpse into their individual process of self expression and emotional response.
On view through October 3 at Bainbridge Arts and Crafts, 151 Winslow, is “Mapping Experience,” a group show featuring Mare Blocker, Lou Cabeen, Alice Dubiel, Adam Magnoni, Ruth Scheuing, and Barbara Lee Smith. Professor Lou Cabeen, of the University of Washington, has brought together this group of artists working in stitched paper, industrial jacquard weaving, collography and quilted fabric, and all of them working with the idea of mapping. The opening reception for the artists is from 4-6pm. On Saturday, September 2 at 2pm, Mare Blocker will demo special methods for embroidery stitching on paper. Childhood’s End Gallery, 222 4th. Avenue W. in Olympia, opens a show featuring Marie Hassett’s mixed media fiber, Bill McEnroe’s watercolor and Mary Randlett’s photography, in a reception from 5-7pm. Opening simultaneously, is a jewelry trunk show, “Fair Portia,” by Gina Vitale Syrja. Another opening for the jewelry show will take place on September 3 from 12-4pm. Collective Visions Gallery, 331 Pacific Avenue in Bremerton, opens from 5-8pm with “Selections” from Ken Jundemo. On view through October 1, the selections for this show include representative examples of works in the varied media Jundemo has used over his long career in three dimensional arts and crafts.
Gasworks Gallery, 3815 4th. Avenue, celebrates the delivery of over 120,000 pounds of potatoes to the Northwest Harvest with a party from 8-10pm. Located in the big blue Jones building, across the street from Dale Chihuly’s famous Boat House and Ivar’s restaurant. East of Gasworks Park, in Wallingford, the space is primarily devoted to artists’ studios.
Honey Salon, 310 W. Holly Street in Bellingham, opens from 6-9pm with the works of Bellingham artist Chris Shreve. Shreve’s work addresses the ability to pull from the invisible and shape the visible.
“September in the Southwest,” opens from 7-9pm at The Island Gallery, 400 Winslow Way on Bainbridge Island. The show introduces the visual art of Sandra Holzman, a new collection of wearable art by gallery favorite Maggy Pavlou, and jewelry by Bara of Santa Fe. First Friday openings around Puget Sound
The Allied Arts of Whatcom County, 1418 Cornwall in Bellingham, continues their 2011 Juried Artist series with “Color Theory,” featuring the work of Phillip Hanson, Kat Schneider and Mary Dudley. The public is invited to the opening night celebration at the Allied Arts Gallery and the Downtown Art Walk: Friday February 4th, from 6pm to 10pm. There will be an Exhibit Walk-Thru with the artists from 6:30pm to 7pm on opening night. The exhibition closes February 28.
artEast Collective Works & UpFront Gallery, 95 Front Street in Issaquah, is showing “The Art of Love” with an open house from 11am – 8pm. Also on view are jewelry and wearable art.

Pun( c )tuation, 705A East Pike Street in Seattle, is hosting a reception from 8-11pm for “Icons: Revelations to Revolutions by Keith Murakata.” The show is an exploration of iconography and a radical stripping of clichés. Using cast metals, ceramics, and wood, Keith Murakata flips the eagle and burns the banner of the strangled stars of this hegemonic, struggling thing called America.

Anchor Art Space, 216 Commercial Avenue in Anacortes, is featuring Ford Gilbreath’s audio and video work for a two-month screening. “Margaret Makes Art, 2009,” is a close-up view of a miniature landscape made by Margaret Lewis Gilbreath, circa 1985. “Moon Root, 2002,” is a long, slow look at the moon through a telescope, and roots underground through a cystoscope. Also continuing through November is “Four Friends/New Work,” long time friends Russ Prather, Carol Phillips, John Harmon and Jean Behnke for an inspiring exhibition of diverse work.The gallery will be open for the Anacortes Art Walk on November 5 from 6-9pm.
Bainbridge Arts and Crafts, 151 Winslow Way, has several artists creating “Patterns” through November 29. Allied Arts of Whatcom County, continues with “Bellingham by Land, Sea & Sky” featuring Ron Pattern and James Williamson. The public is invited to the opening night celebration held during the Bellingham Art Walk from 6pm to 10pm. There will be an exhibit walk through with the artist from 6pm to 7pm on opening night. The show runs through June 26.

Pottery Northwest, 226 First Avenue North in Seattle, opens “Four by Four #2” in a reception from 6-8pm. Residents Alicia Basinger, Erin Campbell, Alya Khan, and Natsue Makino have each invited a guest who has impacted their work in some meaningful way. As the show name implies, this is the second in the Four by Four gallery series featuring gallery artists and also new/up-and-coming (and some established, but non-Seattle-area) artists.
Scott-Milo Gallery, 1004 Commercial Avenue in Anacortes, opens for the Anacortes Art Walk with “Watercolors & Acrylics” by Greg Prince of Snohomish. Also showing are oils by Diane Ainsworth, pastels by Coizie Bettinger, watercolors by Helen Brown and oils by Keith Sorenson.The reception with the artists is Friday, June 4 from 6-9pm and artist Greg Prince will be doing a painting demonstration during the reception. The show closes June 29.
The Island Gallery, 100/106 Madison Avenue on Bainbridge Island, opens “Animals ~ Artists, Mystery & Inspiration,” in an online virtual exhibition at www.theislandgallery.net/shop/ . The show features the work of a group of artists who share their insights into the relationship between animals and man. Shown: a piece by James Kelsey.
