Exclusive Irish glass exhibit at Traver Gallery Tacoma

travertacoma Traver Gallery , 1821 E Dock Street in Tacoma, serves as the only United States venue for “Engaging with Glass,” the first comprehensive survey of Irish glass art in over a decade. The reception for the artists is April 21 from 5-7pm, and the show runs through May 27. The exhibition brings together a broad spectrum of work in glass, ranging from beautifully executed decorative objects to conceptual installation pieces incorporating video elements. Irish artists working at home or abroad, as well as foreign artists living and working in Ireland, are included in the exhibition, which was juried by Dr. Audrey Whitty, Curator of Ceramics, Glass and Asian Collections at the National Museum of Ireland and Tina Oldknow, Curator of Modern Glass at the Corning Museum of Glass. Seattle artist Paula Stokes, whose work is included in the show, was instrumental in bringing the exhibition to the United States. Shown: Roisin de Buitlear, Tambour – Limerick Lace Series.

Glass to me has always been magically. The chemical changes rendered by heat and raw materials result in an item that bears no resemblance to its original constituent parts. When art technique is applied to glassmaking the result is awesome.
